The EU SME Assembly is the most important event for small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe. It is held once a year as the main event of the European SME Week. It is attended by representatives of the European Commission, EU Member States, science, European and national associations and entrepreneurs, who discuss current issues of EU SME policy.
Access to the Assembly and to the award ceremony for European companies is encouraged by a personal invitation from the European Commission.
In 2020, the Assembly is held on 16 and 17 November under the patronage of the German Presidency of the Council of Europe and was officially opened by Mr. Peter Altmeier – Minister of Economy and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany and Mr. Thierry Breton – European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services.
This year, the Assembly focused on implementing a strategy for SMEs to support economic recovery and build a sustainable and stable European corporate ecosystem, and enabled us to celebrate solidarity between societies, the ingenuity and generosity of millions of entrepreneurs and small businesses. led in the fight against the virus and its consequences.
On the first day, during the morning session, the main focuses were on the early warning mechanism and the possibilities and tools for recapitalization of viable small and medium-sized enterprises. The possibilities of Ivest EU, the equity instruments and guarantees of the European Investment Bank were explained.
In the afternoon session, Ms Christine Schreiber, Director of the European Commission’s COSME Program and SME Policy, presented awards in various categories at the ceremony for the promotion of European large, small and medium-sized enterprises.
Nobel laureate and professor at Columbia University Joseph Stiglitz gave a live lecture from New York on innovation in enterprises, the challenges of their development and implementation.
Prof. Stiglitz analyzed some countries and pointed out the direct link between the good management of the health crisis and good economic performance, despite the pandemic.
He reminded that good rules of the financial sector lead to good financial condition and that a successful private sector needs well-trained people.
